About the award

This award recognises a clear commitment to sustainability, demonstrated through good practice and policy to make a positive contribution to reducing impact on the environment.

1 Hotel Mayfair, London

The first mission-driven luxury hotel in the UK, 1 Hotel Mayfair has set the standard for a new kind of ecological experience. The building is a partial refurbishment – a conscious decision taken to reduce the CO2 emissions, saving roughly 4,200 tonnes of carbon and secured an 'Excellent' rating through the UK’s BREEAM standard.

The hotel successfully brings the outdoors in. Guestrooms feature living moss walls, timber flooring crafted from fallen British oak trees and Welsh slate in the bathrooms. The heat and power systems produce electricity that feeds back into the grid and captures waste heat to preheat the domestic hot water. Partnered with Foodprint Group they are developing a True Zero Waste programme across all F&B outlets. Local like-minded artists have created pieces that provoke thought across the hotel which include 'Rainforest', a 4-metre living chandelier consisting of 50,000 strands of Spanish moss.
