AA Restaurant of the Year Wales
About the award
Each year the AA independently inspects hundreds of restaurants across the British Isles. Introduced in 2000, this award recognises restaurants that provide cuisine of a truly excellent standard, as well as demonstrating innovation and ambience and providing a high standard of hospitality.
The Jackdaw, Conwy, Conwy
After catering college, Llandudno-born Nick Rudge started his culinary career at Heston Blumenthal’s Fat Duck in Berkshire. Then he took on a number of different roles and spent some time in Australia. Eventually North Wales called him home, so he returned to start his own restaurant.
Taking over a listed building within the walls of Conwy, Nick named his restaurant after the bird found nesting in the walls of the town and castle. The style of the food is simple, yet dishes are imaginative, prepared with well-sourced ingredients and deliver delicious flavours.
Each dish is described in detail by the knowledgeable, attentive and smiley team. The extensive wine list also deserves to be mentioned for its range, quality and price bracket.
