Each year the AA independently inspects hundreds of restaurants across the British Isles. Introduced in 2000, this award recognises restaurants that provide cuisine of a truly excellent standard, as well as demonstrating innovation and ambience and providing a high standard of hospitality.

The Star Inn at Harome, Helmsley

The Star Inn at Harome remains one of the genuinely individual restaurants in England and feels more relevant now than ever. Turning 30 this year, Andrew Pern’s iconic Yorkshire inn has emerged from the challenges of the fire, not diminished but sharpened and more confident in its identity. With Pern still firmly at the helm, the addition of Stephen Smith as Chef Patron has brought further clarity and momentum to an already exceptional operation. There is a fizzing energy to this warren of characterful rooms full of warmth, theatre and life, backed by exemplary hospitality. The menus balance refinement with generosity and personality. Wine is taken seriously too, with a broad, thoughtful list and strong by-the-glass depth. Crucially, The Star still feels like a proper restaurant, one with atmosphere, soul and purpose.
